Surface 2 of 3 · Kitchen display

Built for a hot kitchen, not a boardroom.

Dada Boudi Hotel Logo

Runs full-screen in kiosk mode on a ₹12,000 Android tablet at the counter. Dark ground, because a white screen under kitchen tube lights glares and the staff stop looking at it. Big type, few colours, and nothing that needs a second tap to understand.

01

The board

One screen the staff live on all day. Three columns, left to right, exactly matching how the food moves. A card can only go forward — there is no drag, no menu, no undo buried in a submenu. Colour means one thing only: saffron is a new order that has not been acknowledged, red is an order running past its promised time.

Order boardAccept sets the prep time the customer sees on their token — 25 / 30 / 40 minutes, one tap, no keyboard. The three buttons are sized for a thumb with flour on it.

New order takeover

A chime alone gets ignored inside four days. So a new order takes the whole screen and keeps chiming until someone touches it. There is no dismiss — only accept or reject with a reason, because an order that is silently ignored is a refund and a bad review.

Can't make this

Rejecting asks you for a reason — out of stock, too busy, or closing. The customer is refunded straight away and told which.

Stock and store controls

Two things the counter needs to change fast when a Sunday goes sideways: what has run out, and how far behind the kitchen is. Both are one tap from the board, and both take effect in the customer app within seconds.

Anything that costs the shop money needs a PIN. Anything that only costs time does not — so nobody hesitates to flip busy mode on when they should.

Store controlsThree levels of severity, three different frictions. Busy mode is one tap because it is the one that gets used twenty times a week.

End of shift

The last screen anyone sees before locking up. It answers the four questions the owner actually asks at close — how many, how much, how late, and what ran out — without anyone opening a laptop.

Mutton sold out before the evening service for the third Sunday running. Worth cooking more.

Shift summaryThe sold-out list with timestamps is the most useful thing on this screen — it is how the kitchen learns to prep the right quantity.

Why it looks like this

Dark, not light

Kitchen tube lighting turns a white screen into a mirror. Dark ground with high-contrast type stays readable from two metres away and across the counter.

Two colours only

Saffron means unacknowledged. Red means late. Nothing else is coloured, so a glance at the board tells you what needs a hand without reading a word.

Forward only

Cards move New → Cooking → Ready. No drag, no reordering, no delete. Mistakes are fixed from the admin console, not by a cook mid-service.

Thumb-sized targets

Every action button is at least 56 px tall. This gets tapped with wet or floury hands, often without looking directly at it.

The KOT still prints

Accept fires the thermal printer automatically. Paper goes to the cook, the screen is for the counter — replacing both at once is how staff adoption fails.

It works offline

Accepted orders are cached on the tablet. If the broadband drops mid-service the board keeps working and syncs when it returns.
